Current status of Network Infrastructure in the six Lariat institutions
The network infrastructure currently available varies considerably among the six Lariat participating institutions. Below, we provide a brief summary of the network capabilities of each institution, along with a synopsis of some of the research and educational activities that are being stymied by this lack of critical infrastructure. We propose a global solution: Lariat will address these shortfalls and bring this region into the mainstream of biomedical research, education and healthcare delivery.
Alaska

The University of Alaska (which is a WWAMI partner) has excellent intra-campus network infrastructure at the Fairbanks and Anchorage campuses that reaches researchers and research facilities on the campuses.

Hawaii

The University of Hawaii has excellent network infrastructure on its campuses reaching researchers and research facilities, and it has excellent intercampus (including inter-island) network facilities and capacity.

Idaho

From a geographical and network pathway perspective, Idaho appears to exist as multiple regions that are exceedingly difficult to interconnect directly to one other within the state.

Montana

Montana State University, a WWAMI partner institution, has excellent campus network infrastructure reaching researchers and research resources.

Nevada

Bioinformatics, molecular sciences, medical education and other programs and areas of excellence and emphasis at the University of Nevada suffer from an inability to interact over networks with geographically remote resources outside of their state network.

Wyoming

Due to poor connectivity to regional and national networks and the University of Washington, which is Wyoming's partner in providing medical education, Wyoming is cut off not only from inclusion in network-based research and clinical opportunities but also from full participation in WWAMI programs.
